2010 Southeast Asian Cultural Martial Arts Festival - Vancouver, Canada - Aug. 7

07/11/2010

Greetings respected guro/guru - just to let you know about the upcoming 2010 Southeast Asian Cultural Martial Arts Festival in Vancouver, Canada on Saturday Aug. 7.

This is the annual event of the Vancouver Kali/Silat Association - composed of Greater Vancouver region Filipino and Southeast Asian (Thai, Indonesian, Malay) martial artists and instructors. Once a year in late summer, all of the instructors gather their students in a local park to share knowledge, see old friends, and meet new ones.

Each instructor has a 30 minute slot during the 7 hour event (with an hour for potluck BBQ) to present some portion of their arts to everyone. All of the instructors and students alike train together. There are demos, performances, traditional dance and music. It is an informal and relaxed atmosphere that supports the presence of families and is open to the public.

Various forms of kali/arnis/esrima, pencak silat, krabi krabong, sayaw, panantukan, and other arts are offered. The public are invited to watch or even train - and they often do. In recent years we have seen as many as 80 people training and as many as 120 coming and going over the day.

If you can make it up to Vancouver, we'd love to have you join us. And if you're interested in presenting, please let us know ASAP! Last year GM Rene Latosa (Latosa escrima) graced our event and the year before that Maha Guru Roedy Wiranatakusumah (pencak silat Gadjah Putih Jati Wisesa, Indonesia) taught.

Arnis declared national martial art and sport

Arnis declared national martial art and sport
December 19, 2009, 9:18pm
Manila Bulletin

In what is regarded as another milestone in Philippine sports, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo officially signed on December 11 Republic Act No. 9850 which declared arnis as the country’s national martial art and sport.

Arnis Philippines (ARPI) president Raymond Velayo said that the law's passage will insure the preservation of arnis as part of the nation’s heritage and will instill in the minds of the Filipinos the sense of nationalism, patriotism, national unity and identity.

Under Velayo's watch, ARPI painstakingly lobbied for the approval of the Bill in both Houses of Congress since the time of former Senator Orly Mercado in 1995, the late Senator Robert Barbers and Cong. Miguel Zubiri in 2001.

The lawmakers who signed the bill into law were Senators Manuelito Lapid, Miguel Zubiri, Mar Roxas, Richard Gordon, Ramon Revilla, Jr., Aquilino Pimentel, Jr. and Representatives Arthur Pingoy, Jr., Pryde Henry Teves, Cesar Jalosjos, Nanette Castelo Daza and Narciso Santiago III with the help of ARPI directors Servillano Padiz, Jr., Ramon Dizon, Medardo Quiambao, and Richmond Velayo.

According to Cong. Teves, the law mandates arnis as a physical education course for the DepEd and will be one of its priorities in the 2010 Palarong Pambansa.

Velayo said arnis is being practiced in all five clusters of the Philippine Olympic Festival (POF) and in all 17 regions in the Palarong Pambansa, the national-based Sports Program promulgated by the Department of Education, all in coordination with ARPI.

Founded in 1986, ARPI is the 33rd official member of Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) and recognized by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).

Bill seeks to make arnis national sport

Bill seeks to make arnis national sport
By Gil C. Cabacungan Jr.
Philippine Daily Inquirer
11/24/2009

MANILA, Philippines - Arnis, the Filipino martial art which uses rattan sticks as weapons, is on the verge of being formally declared the Philippines national sport.

The House of Representatives has already approved on third and final reading a bill declaring Arnis as the national sport and transmitted it to the Senate where arnis enthusiast, Senator Miguel Zubiri, was expected to take the lead in its approval.

South Cotabato Rep. Arthur Pingoy Jr., the main author of House Bill 6516, said arnis deserved to be hailed as the national sport considering that it has evolved as a distinct martial art along with judo karate and taekwondo.

Pingoy said it was about time to elevate arnis considering that it has spawned avid practicioners not only in the Philippines but also in other countries such as the United States, Canada, Germany, among others, where international Arnis federations and organizations have mushroomed.

Negros Oriental Rep. Pryde Henry Teves said that the bill would finally address the "collective sentiment to put arnis in its rightful historical place in the country."
